Poll: most back raise taxes millionaire

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

Six out of ten Americans believe Congress should raise taxes on Americans earning more than $ 1 million per year, according to a new CBS News poll, while only 35 percent opposed such an increase.

The majority of Republican primary voters is narrow to say the people who make more than $ 1 million per year should not see an increase — but they almost split on the question. Forty-three percent want to see the millionaire tax increases, and 51 percent are not.

Democrats who initially proposed paying for the extension and expansion of payroll tax cut by 3.25 percent income tax in excess of $ 1 million-a position they ultimately dropped amid opposition from the Republican party.
